Reef Check Malaysia and DHI meet to coordinate efforts in Semporna (Malaysia)

Reef Check Malaysia is one of the Early Adopters within the ESA PEOPLE-ECCO (Enhancing Ecosystems Conservation through Earth Observation Solutions, Capacity Development, and Co-design) project.

Monitoring coral reefs for 18 years

Established in 2007, Reef Check Malaysia's early efforts focused on coral reef monitoring at a handful of sites in Malaysia. Today, they have become established as a leader in coral reef conservation, conducting annual monitoring of more than 300 coral reef sites in Malaysia.

After 18 years of activity, they continue to engage local communities and contribute actively to the management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems.

Last week, Reef Check Malaysia and DHI met in Semporna (Sabah, Malaysia), to discuss how PEOPLE-ECCO can support management and conservation efforts within coral reef ecosystems. Coral reefs are some of the most diverse aquatic ecosystems on Earth, providing high ecological and economic value.

However, they are facing severe losses due to unsustainable fishing, coastal development, pollution, and extreme climate events. While ground surveys remain the most accurate source of information about the state of coral reefs on a local scale, Earth Observation data can monitor them at a large temporal and spatial scale—thereby effectively supporting the management and conservation of these valuable ecosystems.
