New Geoversity course: Earth Observation for Ecosystem Conservation II

Wednesday 16 September 2026

PEOPLE-ECCO is happy to announce the launch of Earth Observation for Ecosystem Conservation II, the second course in our free online training series on using satellite Earth Observation (EO) for conservation work.

In this new course, learners will explore the main groups of classification algorithms used in conservation EO, and learn how to choose the right tool from six core Earth Observation methods for their specific question.

Through expert-led lectures and hands-on interactive activities, participants will apply these tools to real ecosystem monitoring challenges: detecting vegetation disturbance, tracking productivity trends, mapping submerged aquatic vegetation and coral reef extent, and assessing the frequency and connectivity of aquatic habitats.

The course also introduces two essential skills for evaluating conservation outcomes: rating habitat intactness, and measuring impact through the Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) approach, a way to understand not just what changed, but what your intervention actually achieved.

This course is:

  • Duration: 16 hours, self-paced
  • Level: Beginner
  • Cost: Free
  • Certificate: Certificate of Attendance (80% completion required)
  • Prerequisites: Completion of the first course in the series and/or a basic understanding of EO data acquisition is recommended; general knowledge of conservation issues is helpful but not required
